Founded in 2012, UDL is an alliance of established and independent design studios serving brands and organisations worldwide. Its work spans brand design, industrial design, fashion and creative direction, providing design consultancy and innovative solutions across disciplines.

In 2026, UDL’s Shenzhen studio moved into a new workspace. Extending UDL’s open and collaborative way of working, as well as its increasingly human-centred ethos, the space was conceived as a warm and vibrant workplace in which people could remain comfortable throughout the working day.

The studio is situated along a quiet, slow-paced street. From the windows on the second floor, the view opens onto evergreen trees and a pond where children gather to fish. The existing building is defined by a sequence of triangular roofs and structural columns, with generous glazing on all sides. Natural light enters through the high-level skylights and gently diffuses throughout the interior.

The surrounding landscape, the distinctive architectural structure, and the abundance of soft natural light already provided a strong foundation for a space designed for long periods of occupation. Rather than introducing excessive intervention, the design focuses on details closely connected to the everyday experience of work: comfortable spacing between seats; storage and electrical systems tailored to UDL’s way of working; bookshelves positioned to define space without obstructing views; lighting that transitions naturally between day and night; and the relationship between the air-conditioning system and the newly introduced structures.

The material palette is similarly restrained. Variations of white extend across the furniture, cabinetry, walls and ceilings. While preserving the brightness of the space, subtle shifts in texture introduce a sense of warmth. The existing window openings have been retained wherever possible, allowing the trees, sky and changing light outside to become an ever-evolving backdrop to the studio. The meeting room, by contrast, is conceived as a relatively independent volume framed in warm timber — a quiet, focused and enveloping space within the open workplace.

Through these subtle considerations of scale, light, material and systems, we hope to bring lasting warmth and comfort to the forty hours we spend together each week.
